What I'll Take With Me From My Time in Tanzania

Ernest Hemingway once said, “I never knew of a morning in Africa when I woke up that I was not happy.”

Having just returned from 15 days in Kenya and Tanzania, I find this sentiment perfectly captures my own experience. From exploring the Serengeti in an open jeep to reconnecting with family and immersing myself in the wonders of nature and wildlife, the journey was both inspiring and transformative. As I hold onto the magic and memories of this adventure, I also carry with me valuable life lessons that I hope to weave into my return to everyday life.

The importance of physical space in creating mental space.

One of the most valuable insights I gained was the importance of space. In the heart of the Serengeti, the vast, open landscapes are not just visually stunning but also mentally liberating. The sprawling savannahs and expansive horizons provide a sense of freedom that’s hard to come by in our often cluttered and hectic lives. This physical space translated into mental clarity for me, allowing my thoughts to flow freely and my mind to breathe. It reminded me of the necessity of carving out space in our own lives for introspection.

Disconnecting to reconnect.

Another significant lesson was the power of disconnecting from technology. Without the constant hum of notifications and the relentless pace of digital communication, I rediscovered the joy of being present. Reconnecting with nature and spending quality time with family took on new meaning. The raw beauty of Tanzania’s landscapes and majestic wildlife provided a profound reminder of the simple pleasures that often get overshadowed by our digital distractions.

We are all the same.

Traveling through Africa also reinforced a fundamental truth: people live everywhere, and though we may come from different backgrounds, we share more similarities than differences. This realization struck me deeply as I interacted with locals and saw firsthand how universal our experiences and emotions are. It’s easy to forget this when we’re surrounded by familiar comforts and viewpoints, but Africa’s diverse tapestry of cultures and traditions brought this truth into sharp focus.

Kindness is King.

Perhaps the most enduring lesson from my time in Tanzania was the kindness and genuine warmth of its people. In a world that often feels increasingly fragmented and challenging, the compassion and hospitality I encountered were solace for my soul. The people I met demonstrated that kindness is a universal language that transcends cultural and linguistic barriers. Their generosity reminded me that true happiness comes not from material wealth but from the connections we forge with others.

Beauty is all around us.

And then there were the sunsets—each one a breathtaking masterpiece etched into my memory. The vivid colors of the African sky at dusk became my happy place. These sunsets served as daily reminders of life’s inherent beauty and the simple joys that often go unnoticed.

As I reflect on my incredible adventure, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences and lessons I’ve gained. The magic of Kenya and Tanzania has left a lasting impression on me, and I am excited to integrate the insights and inspirations from this journey into my daily life.

Cleansing Hearts: Perfect for adventures in the dusty Serengeti! After a thrilling game drive, I’d return to our tent, dampen a Cleansing Heart with warm water, and wash away the day’s dust. Tanzania’s eco-conscious approach, with its restrictions on plastic, made these an ideal choice. They’re gentle on the environment and on your skin.

Jelly Bags: Tanzania’s ban on plastic bags made these Jelly Bags indispensable. I used them to organize crucial items: one for passports, visas, and travel documents; another for toiletries; a third for medications; and a fourth for cords, earbuds, and other odds and ends. They’re easy to clean—just rinse or wipe—and perfect for all travel needs.
